Altzella Monastery Park – monks, painters and pure romanticism
Located next to Nossen in a small town between Leipzig and Dresden is the Altzella Monastery Park.
The monastery, transferred to the Cistercian Order in the 12th century, became one of the wealthiest and most influential monasteries in Germany. Altzella had an important scientific library and, from 1506, a library reading-room.
The arrival of the Reformation in Saxony put a stop to all this. The monastery was dissolved, the library given away, and the buildings fell into dilapidation.
The present landscaped park, with the ruins incorporated into its design, dates back to around 1800. Succumb to the magic of 190-year-old beech trees and painstakingly restored buildings.
Today it is used for marriages, exhibitions, concerts and congresses. The sophisticated parkway invites one for a romantic walk through the historic ruins and along mystic paths. Incidentally, Caspar David Friedrich, the brilliant Romantic artist, found inspiration here for his world-famous paintings.
