Tharandt Forest – fascinating nature reserve

In the south-west of Dresden you can find one of the prettiest hiking areas of Saxony – the Tharandt Forest. Here, far away from the city’s noise and stress, you can dive into a green and natural world. With its canyons and valleys, mountain tops and cliffs, its colourful plants and the splendid trees, the Tharandt Forest is worth a visit in any season. Experience a landscape that inspired the artists of Romanticism.

It is the right place to escape from everyday life and to discover nature. Interesting hiking or bicycle tours, combined with a picnic, guarantee variation and recreation.

More than 190 kilometres (120 miles) of marked trails and several neat resting and barbecue places make the Tharandt Forest a paradise for hikers. The many trails were the result of Heinrich Cotta’s creation of a trail system for the forest (for the correct measurement and use of its timber). That was in the 19th century – nowadays you may use the system of trails to create a tour according to your wishes.

If you collect seals on your hiking pass ("Wanderpass"), you can get a gold, silver, or bronze pin to take home with you as a souvenir.

The Song Trail ("Weg der Lieder"), the Senses Trail ("Sinnenpfad"), the Wood Trail ("Holzweg"), and the Mining Trail ("Bergbaulehrpfad") are only a few of our thematic hiking trails that ensure a lot of fun in the Tharandt Forest.

The area is not the centre of the world, but it is the geographical centre of Saxony. Listen to the yearly choir concert, or enjoy a hike in the fascinating nature reserve!
