Moritzburg Castle

Moritzburg - delightful lakeland scenery

The growth of the tourist infrastructure is an important aspect – with good reason, since more than one million people visit the region annually.

Main attraction – the castle

The Wettin princes were enthusiastic hunters. Because of its vicinity to Dresden – the dynasty’s residence – and because it was surrounded by forests with abundant game, they chose Moritzburg as their hunting seat. The castle was mainly used in the hunting season.

Today its exhibition floor houses a decorative arts display with 18 th-century furniture, chinaware, paintings and one of the world’s largest collections of hunting trophies. In the classical music season, concerts renowned for their high standards are held there.

Equine entertainment

Horse-breeding in Moritzburg owes its origin to the Wettin passion for the chase. The annual parades on three days in September have become highlights in Moritzburg’s programme. In other respects, too, horses are a major feature of the Moritzburg scene: horse-drawn carriages, indoor equestrian tournaments and visits to riding stables are some of its attractions.

Ponds – not only for fishing

The Moritzburg Pond District today includes more than 20 ponds. The pleasure of fishing and eating carp began to be shared by the general public only towards the end of the 19th century. The tradition is still very much alive and thousands of people flock to watch the fishing and participate in the animated market at the end of October.

The Game Enclosure

Located in the vicinity of the pheasant lodge on the road to Radeburg, visitors will find the Game Enclosure. Here people can observe local fauna under almost-natural conditions. Guided tours on specific aspects can be arranged for visitors, especially groups of school children and senior citizens. The Game Enclosure is open year round. The daily feeding time is 2:39 p.m.
