Dresden - the traditional Saxon capital on the Elbe
The Elbe and the gently rolling landscape between Saxon Switzerland and Meissen determine the nature in which the city on the river is embedded. The climate is equally beneficial for the development of the arts and for viniculture. The inhabitants are known for their own special charm – Saxon hospitality is legendary.
At the same time Dresden is a modern city with the flair of the former Saxon residence – simply a place with life style. Millions of guests visit Dresden every year.
When it comes to putting on splendid celebrations, Dresden boasts remarkable traditions dating back centuries. A flourishing and extremely diverse festival culture has survived to the present day.
The "Striezelmarkt" (the oldest German Christmas market), which was founded in 1434, the Dresden "Vogelwiese" (fun fair), which is over 400 years old, as well as the diverse Baroque court festivities during the period of Augustus the Strong, established this tradition and continue to contribute to Dresden's European reputation as a city of celebrations and festivals to this day.
Dresden offers also a great variety of attractions. No book about the history of architecture can miss mentioning the Dresden Zwinger. The Frauenkirche Church, Semper Opera House and Royal Palace as well as many other historical monuments and ensembles shape the image of the city. The saucy angels from Raphael's "The Sistine Madonna" create publicity for Dresden's art collections around the world. Magnificent promenades on the bank of the Elbe, interesting museums and institutions, industrial monuments, charming details – Dresden has a lot for you to discover.
