Pirna - The Fascination of Stone
Gateway to Saxon Switzerland
Pirna is one of the most beautiful and best preserved Medieval cities in Saxony and the gateway to Saxon Switzerland.
Interesting Sights
Romantics, people interested in cultural history and fans of historic old cities can stroll through the historic old city on their way to the city's architectural gems: the marketplace with its Renaissance and Baroque buildings, the city hall with its gothic portals, Sonnenstein Castle with its magnificent view over the city and the Church of St. Marien, with its imposing roof and the 60 metres-high siege tower.
The view over the marketplace reminds us of paintings by the court artist to the Electoral Princes of Saxony and Kings of Poland, Bernado Bellotto, who is known as "Canaletto". His extremely detailed cityscapes have made Pirna famous in the international art scene.
Famous Sandstone
Pirna's riches are partially built on sand of the famous Elb sandstone. Quarrying still goes on in the region today and the stones are used for famous bulidings, such as the Church of our Lady in Dresden and the Reichstag parliament building in Berlin.
