Radebeul - city of wine and gardens

Water and Wine

Like in no other city in Saxony, water and wine gave the city of Radebeul its present character. Located halfway between Dresden and Meissen and stretching out 8 kilometres in length, Radebeul owes its uniqueness to the water of the river Elbe on the one side and the steep terraced vineyards on the other. This Elbe landscape is beautiful when seen from the deck of a side-wheel steamship or by car on the "Saxonian Road of Wine". The wines of this most north-eastern wine region of Europe, noted for the first time in a document almost 700 years ago, are very highly regarded by connoisseurs.

Wackerbarth and Winnetou

Probably the most well-known hero of the city could be Winnetou – created by the author Karl May 100 years ago. The adventures of Winnetou as a chief of the Apache Indians in North America, as well as the adventures of his best friend, Old Shatterhand, are very popular throughout Germany and made Radebeul, as the residence of their creator, known outside Saxony.

Less known but worth seeing as well is the heritage of Duke Wackerbarth, who in 1730 chose Radebeul at the foot of the vineyards for his home as an elder statesman and made it a "noble address".

Rest and Hospitality

By walking on the easy hills and vineyards above Radebeul, the day's hectic busyness is quickly left behind. Wandering between the "Friedensburg" and "Spitzhaus", taking views of wine-growers’ houses and little castles, and taking a rest in the restaurant "Hof Loessnitz" where a museum displays wine-growing from the past to the present is very relaxing.

Descending into the city of villas you will notice the old centres of wine-growers' villages now forming parts of the city. Hospitality, combined with a glass of local wine and Saxonian cuisine at one of the many festivals, makes Radebeul a pleasant stay.

Stages and Steam

The flair of the city has always been the source of its intellectual and cultural vigour. One example is the "Landesbuehnen Sachsen", the biggest travelling German theatre company which has its home stage in Radebeul.
During a stay in Radebeul it is a must to go on a journey full of nostalgic flair and steam railway romance on the scenic "Loessnitzgrundbahn". On his way from Radebeul to Radeburg the "Loessnitz Dachshund" as it is nicknamed by the local people, covers a distance of 16.6 km.

And finally the railways link Radebeul with its surroundings. The historic narrow-gauge steam-train operating since 1884 makes a trip a great event.
