Riesa - The Sports Giant

The Legend of Riesa

The similarity between the word "Riese" (Giant) and "Riesa" (town Riesa) animated the people many years ago to invent a legend which people still like to talk about today.
A giant, on his wanderings, is said to have passed through the Elbe valley. He was tired and had to rest. His boots were filled with sand and he emptied them. There was so much sand that it made a hill, and it was there that Riesa later was founded.

The old legend still exists today in the town. For example in the themed restaurant complex "Riesenhügel" (Giant Hill) which includes Riesa's own brewery, or the annual "Riesenstadtfest" (Giant City Festival) including the "Riesenolympiade" (Giant Olympics).

Interesting Things

The area around Riesa has excellent railway connections to the whole of Germany as well as a traffic airfield in Riesa-Göhlis. There in the "Fliegerklause" not only pilots like to have a schmooze.
Riesa's position on the Elbe is ideally located for water and bike tourists. The Elbe bicycle path leads directly to Riesa and people passing by like to stop off here and get to know the town better.

Worth Experiencing

The "Elbe Spring" is located in Riesa. It is the name of an iron masterpiece measuring 25 metres tall and weighing 400 tons, and was made by Professor Jörg Immendorff as a special tourist attraction. But there is so much more to discover in the city. For example the historic monastery including the church and the mummies exhibition in the tomb, the Chapter House in the town hall, the city's museum, the municipal park and the city centre of Riesa  including shops, cafés and restaurants. The Trinitas Church is also worth a visit. You will be rewarded with a fantastic view after climbing up to the top of the tower.

The famous pasta factory "Nudelcenter" provides an insight into modern food production and during the tour visitors can see the pasta being made as well as visit the museum. Later the you can enjoy it in the on-site restaurant "Makkaroni".

Sports and Events

Riesa, the city of sport, has already hosted many national and international competitions. The "erdgas arena" provides the town with a versatile events hall which can be used for a wide range of different activities from rock and pop concerts, trade fairs, jazz and blues evenings to orchestra performances. Simply indulge yourself with an unforgettable experience in Riesa. The highlights so far include the first ever Sumu - World Cup to be held outside of Japan and the ice show performed by Katarina Witt.

Dont miss to take a break in the sportive and highly attractive city of Riesa!
