Altzella Monastery Park
Altzella, once one of the most important Cistercian monasteries in Central Germany, existed from 1162 to 1540. It had been founded by Margrave Otto von Meißen. For almost 200 years, it was used by the Wettins as a family burial place, which is commemorated by the Classicist mausoleum that was inaugurated in 1804. In 1800, the 3.5 ha landscape garden was laid out under the direction of court gardener Gottfried Huebler in the style of
Romanticism.
Romantic painters, such as Ludwig Richter and Caspar David Friedrich, found motifs in the
Altzella Monastery Park for their paintings.
Those who would like to know more about the lives of the monchs can visit the Refectory and Library Room in the restored Konversenhaus.
Today, the place is used as a venue for a number of events, such as seminars and guided
tours. Even weddings are celebrated in this Romantic setting.
By the way, an interesting idea for making a gift is available: the gift voucher for the
numerous events in the Monastery Park, ideal for making a present.
